HIV INFECTIONS RISE, OVER 334,700 PEOPLE LIVING WITH VIRUS IN GHANA, NEW DATA REVEALS

New national data released to mark World AIDS Day 2025 reveals that more than 334,700 people are currently living with HIV in Ghana, with new infections and AIDS-related deaths remaining alarmingly high.

According to figures released by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Ghana recorded over 15,200 new HIV infections and more than 12,600 AIDS-related deaths in 2024 alone, underscoring the urgent need for strengthened prevention, treatment, and care programs.

Mr. Ofosu acknowledged that while evidence-based interventions have yielded progress, persistent stigma, discrimination, and inconsistent treatment adherence continue to undermine national efforts and leave vulnerable populations at risk.

World AIDS Day 2025 is being observed under the global theme “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” with Ghana adopting the sub-theme “Africa Unites Against AIDS.” The themes emphasize the need for resilient health systems, regional collaboration, and sustained investment in HIV services.

Key initiatives introduced in 2025 to bolster Ghana’s response include securing dedicated funding for essential HIV services, approving a revised National Workplace HIV and Wellness Policy, and launching a National HIV Response Sustainability Roadmap aimed at expanding treatment access and building long-term system resilience.

The government also highlighted the economic impact of HIV, urging private sector involvement through workplace testing programs, non-discriminatory policies, and investments in employee wellness.

Health workers, civil society organizations, and development partners were commended for their ongoing commitment, as the public was encouraged to know their status, utilize self-testing kits, seek early treatment, and help combat stigma and discrimination.
