HON. OKUDZETO ABLAKWA MEETS UKRAINE PRESIDENT ZELENSKY, APPEALS FOR RELEASE OF TWO GHANAIANS CAPTURED FIGHTING FOR RUSSIA

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has appealed to Volodymyr Zelensky for the release of two Ghanaian prisoners of war captured while fighting for Russia in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Mr Ablakwa, who is on a rare official visit to Kyiv, described the detained men as victims of manipulation and criminal trafficking networks that allegedly lured them into joining Russian forces.

Ukrainian authorities say they have identified more than 1,780 Africans from 36 countries fighting on Russia’s side, with a number currently in Ukrainian custody.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andriy Sybiga, confirmed that discussions were held regarding the possible return of the two Ghanaians.

Mr Sybiga also urged Ghana to intensify efforts to prevent the recruitment of its citizens by Russia, as diplomatic engagements continue over the fate of the detained men.
