Renowned American gospel musician, Kirk Franklin has raised issues regarding popular beliefs in Western Christianity like how marriage, giving, and sexuality are often used as weapons in the faith.
During Cam Newton’s Funky Friday show, the 54-year-old artist criticized the idea of marriage being portrayed as a solution for sin, stating that it is frequently distorted to push unmarried people into getting married.
“Marriage has been weaponized in Western Christianity,” Franklin challenged the concept that marriage can resolve sin.
He highlighted that this idea may result in criticism and excessive stress on individuals who are not in relationships.
Based on his own experiences with his wife, Tammy Collins, Franklin discussed the negative effects of strict religious teachings they have faced.
He highlighted the difficulties that single women, especially Black women, encounter within their communities when they are not married or do not have children.
Franklin condemned these societal pressures as dysfunctional and argued that one’s identity and worth should not be linked to marital status.
“There’s a tendency to view being unmarried or childless as a flaw,” he noted, calling for a shift in perspective.
He also pondered how some of his friends were pressured into getting married due to the belief that it was required for serving in ministry.
Franklin disputed this belief, stating that God’s capability to utilize individuals does not depend on whether they are married or not. He criticized the act of stigmatizing individuals experiencing divorce.
“Many rush into marriage believing they’re fulfilling God’s will, but in reality, they’re following human dogma. Being single doesn’t disqualify you from being used by God,” he argued.
In conclusion, Franklin emphasized the significance of grasping faith and purpose outside of marital status, discussing the challenges he and his wife have faced together since getting married in 1996.
