“I NEVER THOUGHT MAHAMA WOULD RETURN AS PRESIDENT, BUT HE DID, NPP CAN WIN IN 2028 TOO” — Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed surprise over the 2024 election outcome but remains optimistic about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chances in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking during his ongoing Thank You Tour in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia reflected on the unexpected return of John Dramani Mahama as president, citing the hardships experienced during Mahama’s previous tenure, such as the infamous “dumsor” (power outages) crisis, as reasons why he initially doubted Mahama’s victory.

“Because of the hardship like experiencing dumsor Mahama put Ghanaians through in his previous tenure, it never crossed my mind that he would win the 2024 election; however, he did. Which shows that there is hope for me and NPP to come to power come 2028,” Bawumia stated.

He revealed that former President John Kufuor’s encouragement played a significant role in boosting his morale after the 2024 defeat. Drawing on Kufuor’s experience, Bawumia recalled the multiple losses he and former president Nana Akufo-Addo endured before their eventual victory in the 2016 elections.

“Kufuor encouraged me when I lost the 2024 election, using his presidential experience as a beacon of hope,” he noted.

“We faced losses before, but that only made our eventual win sweeter. I am optimistic that we will return to power in 2028.”

Background: NPP’s 2024 Election Defeat

The 2024 general elections marked a significant setback for the NPP, with the party suffering a heavy defeat both in the presidential and parliamentary contests. Incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia secured 41.61% of the presidential vote, trailing behind NDC’s John Mahama, who won with 56.55%.

The election results also reflected a dramatic shift in parliamentary representation, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) capturing a commanding majority of 183 seats, compared to the NPP’s 88 seats in the 9th Parliament. Analysts have attributed the defeat to a combination of voter dissatisfaction with the economy, including persistent inflation and the energy crisis, as well as effective campaigning by the opposition.

Following the defeat, the NPP established a 12-member committee led by former Speaker Mike Oquaye to investigate the causes of the loss. Although the report remains confidential, it is expected to guide the party’s strategy for the next electoral cycle.

Dr. Bawumia’s recent remarks indicate the party’s readiness to regroup, learn from past mistakes, and mount a formidable challenge in the 2028 elections.
