Renowned Ghanaian media personality and broadcast journalist, Vim Lady, aka Afia Pokua, recently talked up about a disturbing episode of sexual harassment she had while on a bus.
Vim Lady related a disturbing encounter she had on a bus ride from Tema to Accra in an open video that she shared on social media. She mentioned that the incident happened a few years back as she was returning from an assignment for a newspaper firm.
Vim Lady described the experience, saying that while travelling, she felt someone’s hands on her thighs. She didn’t feel like she could handle the situation at first because of how packed and dark the bus was.
“It was a while back, during my time working for a newspaper. On that particular day, after covering a story, I boarded a bus to return to the office and file my report. Throughout the journey, I felt someone’s unwanted touch on my thighs. Trapped in the packed bus and with limited visibility, I couldn’t react,” she recounted.
Vim Lady was shocked and appalled to learn later that the man sitting next to her—who was identified as the driver’s mate—had sex on her skirt.
She was so furious and disgusted that she smacked the offender out of reflex, which caused other passengers to step in and exact more punishment.
“After a passenger disembarked, I adjusted myself and realized the driver’s mate had committed this despicable act. In a surge of fury, I slapped him, and fellow commuters joined in to confront him. Despite their urging to involve the authorities, I hesitated,” Vim Lady disclosed.
Vim Lady decided not to call the police after the incident because she was afraid of possible stigma and victim-blaming. She acknowledged the common incidence of assaults of this kind against women in public transportation settings and stressed the long-lasting emotional impact of the experience.
“The trauma from that incident lingers. It was a shocking and violating experience. Sadly, it’s not an isolated case. Many women endure similar harassment while commuting. It’s a pervasive issue that demands attention,” she asserted.
Vim Lady called for decisive action from society and government to address sexual violence, and she advised young women to be vigilant about their surroundings and interactions.
