I TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR VETTING CHAOS – Minority Leader, Afenyo Markin Tells Speaker

Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has assumed complete accountability for the disorder that ensued during the evaluation of certain ministerial nominees last week.

Addressing Parliament on February 4, 2025, Afenyo-Markin recognized the disturbances that raised worries among the public.

The Effutu MP urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to rethink his decision and its implications after the incident occurred. This opposes the minority’s original position that the Speaker operated beyond the House’s Standing Orders.

“Mr Speaker, I take full responsibility as a leader on my side, on all actions that took place. I will therefore conclude by inviting you, Mr Speaker, to in the circumstance and with assurance given, consider a recession of the decision you communicated to the house, as well as all consequential matters there too,” he stated.

The Majority leader called for a more accommodating stance in dealing with the consequences of the unrest.

The vetting session, characterized by intense discussions and interruptions, resulted in the Speaker forming a special committee to look into the issue.

Moreover, four MPs from each side were suspended after the clash.

The suspended MPs include the two chief Whips for both the Minority and Majority caucuses, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as well as Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
