Ghana’s coach, Otto Addo, has responded to critics following his inability to lead the Black Stars to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Despite overseeing one of Ghana’s most disappointing qualification campaigns, Addo did not apologize for the team’s lackluster performances; instead, he sought to justify the results.
Ghana secured only three points out of a possible 15, confirming their elimination before their final match against Niger in Accra on Monday.
The Black Stars missed a crucial opportunity to stay in contention after relinquishing a one-goal lead in a 1-1 draw against Angola last Friday, leaving the Palancas Negras unbeaten in the qualifiers.
Addressing the press ahead of the match against Niger, Addo defended his credentials, stating, “I trained under Matthias Sammer, and I trained under Jürgen Klopp. I was also an assistant to Edin Terzic, who was the head coach of Dortmund.”
“They are also critical of some things, but this has much more value if I speak to Jurgen Klopp and he says this or that than somebody from anywhere saying blah blah, this is bad.
Admitting his record was poor, he added, “People can judge me by my results, which were not good.”
While calls for his resignation have intensified, Addo appears to maintain the support of the upper hierarchy, despite failing to qualify Ghana for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004.
