Gospel artist Cwesi Oteng has recommended that efforts to address the galamsey issue should be increased.
During an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, he expressed his surprise that the illegal miners were able to conduct their activities without being caught.
“It’s like the system has closed its mind to the situation. Perhaps some of the wealthy [people ] that do these things also support government. I don’t know how the forces of the land have not taken action,” he told the host Kwame Dadzie.
Cwesi suggested that despite the military being sent to certain mining sites to assist in monitoring the situation, he hoped it would not be just a temporary solution.
“Currently I have seen that the soldiers are trying to clear people from the water bodies. I wish that can be consistent on a daily basis. Not like a one week something because as for the water it is changing and eventually it will reach us all,” he said.
This happened a couple of weeks following the resurgence of discussions on illegal mining sparked by demonstrations and rallies by certain organizations.
Following the ongoing strike by Organised Labour, President Nana Akufo-Addo has decided to send more military personnel to enhance the crackdown on galamsey, halt mining in forest reserves, improve the handling of illegal mining cases, and is urging for a national agreement on illegal mining.
