Renowned British actor and filmmaker Idris Elba has engaged in high-level discussions with President John Dramani Mahama to explore a groundbreaking initiative aimed at boosting Ghana’s creative sector.
During a courtesy visit to the President on March 28, 2025, Elba proposed the establishment of an ultra-modern film and creative village near Osu Castle a project he believes will serve as a transformative hub for the country’s entertainment industry.
“We remain committed to strengthening Ghana’s creative sector. Securing a location near Osu Castle presents an exciting opportunity, as it is a significant cultural landmark that can play a vital role in this initiative,” Elba stated.
The award-winning filmmaker emphasized that the project would create employment opportunities and foster educational growth for Ghanaian creatives.
“Our focus is not just on filmmaking but also on education and job creation. We’ve carefully considered how this initiative can empower local talent and open doors for creatives in Ghana,” he added.
President John Mahama welcomed the proposal, affirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring proper planning and execution.
“Osu Castle is a UNESCO heritage site, so major structural changes are limited. However, we are keen on restoring it and integrating a vibrant crafts market where visitors can purchase authentic African crafts,” Mahama explained.
Recognizing the urban development challenges, the President also highlighted the need for strategic planning to manage traffic congestion in the area.
“A project of this scale requires thorough urban engineering to prevent congestion in the district. We will work with experts to ensure seamless integration into the city’s development,” he concluded.
