The Ghana Revenue Authority(GRA) revealed on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, that a 10% tax will be imposed on all lottery and sports betting winnings, while betting companies will face a 20% withholding tax on their gross gaming revenue.
The choice has led to public anger and raised questions about its potential economic consequences.
Despite the NPP and NDC parties announcing in their manifesto that they will eliminate the betting tax, Kofi Akpaloo of the LPG revealed in an interview on Hitz FM that he would raise the tax on betting to 60% if given the opportunity.
He stated that raising the betting tax will dissuade many young people from betting further and push them to prioritize hard work and earn money through legitimate means.
“If I had my way I will increase the tax betting to 60% . I want to give them jobs to do and then they focus on the job. Unless you’ve not been there before. I have been there before so I’m talking out of experience.” He disclosed.
