The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced worries regarding the difficulties confronting Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, indicating that a reassessment might be needed if problems like food shortages, housing issues, and erratic academic schedules continue.
While at the Manhyia Palace for a courtesy visit from Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, the Asantehene raised concerns about the policy’s effectiveness as it stands now.
“If the students will go to school under the Free SHS policy and would not be fed due to food shortage; face accommodation challenges; and vacate after few days in school, then it would be better to cancel the policy. Or it can be reviewed for those who can afford to pay for it,” he stated.
His comments arise amid increasing worries from parents, teachers, and students regarding the viability of the Free SHS program, which has been a key initiative of the government.
In reply, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu recognized the difficulties and assured the Asantehene that the government was dedicated to addressing them.
He disclosed that his ministry is implementing strategies to enhance feeding, housing, and the overall management of the policy to boost its effectiveness.
