“IF WE DON’T FIX THE ELECTRICITY COMPANY OF GHANA WE’LL CONTINUE TO HAVE MAJOR POWER PROBLEMS – President John Mahama

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has suggested the potential of privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as a measure to tackle inefficiencies in the nation’s power distribution network.

The President is of the opinion that engaging the private sector in the management of ECG may assist in addressing persistent issues, such as operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and insufficient service delivery.

During a meeting with a World Bank delegation on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at his private office in Accra, Mahama remarked that privatization could be a component of a larger strategy aimed at modernizing and improving the energy sector’s performance.

Mahama also guaranteed stakeholders that choices about ECG’s future would include extensive consultations to align public interest with the necessity for enhanced performance.

“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain. So, going ahead with privatising the last point of electricity distribution, bringing in private sector efficiency is something that we want to take up again. We want to speak with the World Bank to get the expertise to be able to do that.” he said.
