Ghanaian reggae star and Grammy nominee Rocky Dawuni has responded to criticism over his issuance of a diplomatic passport, urging his detractors to channel any grievances to the government.

In an interview on Okay FM, Dawuni said he neither lobbied for nor requested the diplomatic passport. He explained that the decision came unexpectedly, possibly because of his international engagements and frequent travels. He suggested that officials, observing his global activities, may have granted it in the interest of promoting Ghana.

“There was no prior communication or lobbying. They are all witnesses to our works and international travels. Based on your experience and frequent visits, they might provide it in benefit of the country,” he explained.

Dawuni emphasized that the diplomatic passport is a recognition of his long-standing commitment to representing Ghana abroad, not just through music but also in diplomatic and advocacy roles.

To those who believe he doesn’t deserve it, he issued a firm response:
“Those saying I don’t deserve it, that’s their business. If you have anything to say, go to the government with your disapproval. I am busy working and unconcerned with that.”

He also pointed to his global contributions, from serving as a UN ambassador to headlining concerts in Costa Rica and Brazil, as well as participating in the shaping of legislation in the United States.

“If you research about me, you’ll know I’m a UN ambassador. I was vetted for that after years of hard work. Is it a passport that is something special? Even a recording academy in Washington met in Congress and I was invited for the legislation which has now become an American law. So if the government wants to facilitate my works, I’m grateful for it,” he stated.

Dawuni further clarified that holding a diplomatic passport doesn’t make him a political figure but rather enables him to better represent Ghana on the global stage.
