“IF YOU THINK RENT IS EXPENSIVE IN GHANA, GO TO CANADA AND SEE” – Hawa Koomson

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Mavis Hawa Koomson has defended Ghana’s rent prices in the face of mounting criticism over the country’s exorbitant living expenses.

In a recent interview with Nana Yaa Brefo and JB on Onua FM’s morning show, Yɫn Nsɛmpa, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East advised Ghanaians to do a comparison between rent costs in Ghana and Canada.

She talked about her recent trip to Canada, pointing out that it was far more expensive than Ghana to rent even a single room there—more than 2,000 Canadian dollars a month.

Hawa Koomson highlighted the significant disparities in rent costs between Ghana and Canada, highlighting the difficulties with affordability that many Ghanaians encounter.

Hawa Koomson remarked that “If you think rent is expensive in Ghana, go to Canada and see.” The statement comes amid growing concerns over rising living costs globally, particularly in developed countries like Canada.

She said Ghana is still reasonably priced despite the world economy’s difficulties, blaming this on government initiatives.

In response to claims that living conditions in Canada were superior to those in Ghana, Koomson refuted the claim that living expenses in Canada are superior.

She justified the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, pointing out that one important intervention was the provision of food supplies to citizens.

Hawa Koomson clarified that Ghana chose to distribute food because of resource constraints, in contrast to Canada where stipends were offered.
