“I’LL HAVE MY LAWYERS WRITE TO OB AMPONSAH TO SHARE REVENUE FOR USING MY NAME IN HIS COMEDY SHOW —Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Threatens Legal Action Against Comedian

Energy Minister and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has issued a stern warning to Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah over the alleged use of his name in a recent comedy performance.

The prominent politician claims the comedian capitalised on his name for commercial gain without consent and says legal action is now being considered.

Speaking during a media interaction, Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated, “I’ll have my lawyers write to OB Amponsah to share revenue for using my name in his comedy show.

His comment has since stirred controversy across political and entertainment circles, with many weighing in on the fine line between satire and defamation, and whether public figures can truly claim exclusivity over the use of their names in comedic content.

While the specific joke or segment in question has not yet been made public, OB Amponsah is known for his political satire and frequent references to public figures in his comedy routines.

The comedian has previously performed skits involving various political leaders, often using humor to comment on Ghana’s socio-political issues.

Dr. Prempeh’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some argue that the move is an attempt to stifle artistic expression and comedic freedom, especially in a democratic society where public figures are often the subject of satire.

Others, however, believe the minister has a right to protect his image and seek compensation if his name was exploited purely for profit.

As of the time of publication, OB Amponsah has not officially responded to the threat of legal action.

The story continues to trend on social media, raising broader questions about intellectual property, comedy ethics, and the rights of public figures in Ghana’s fast-growing entertainment industry
