‘I’M A BEAUTIFUL GIRL’ – Examiner Reveals Trend of Love Notes, Phone Numbers in WASSCE Answer Booklets

Ernest Ato Bentil, an education consultant and examiner, reports that some students now submit personal notes instead of exam answers, highlighting systemic failures in foundational education.

An examiner has exposed a troubling trend in Ghana’s education system: some candidates are now submitting love notes and phone numbers in their answer booklets instead of attempting examination questions.

Ernest Ato Bentil, an educational technology consultant and CEO of Jnycafey Training Consult, shared the observation during an interview on Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show, describing the practice as symptomatic of deeper academic deficiencies.

“As an examiner, sometimes you will open the answer booklet and realize the candidate did not write anything,” Mr. Bentil revealed. “There was a time I opened the booklet of a female candidate and saw a note; she had written, ‘I’m a beautiful girl’ and had added her phone number to it.”

He explained that such actions suggest an expectation of negotiation with examiners a practice strictly prohibited by WAEC regulations and reflect a fundamental lack of preparedness.

Mr. Bentil attributed the behavior to weak educational foundations developed early in students’ academic journeys. “Most of our students suffer in the Junior High School levels because their foundation in the upper primary level was weak,” he stated. “If a child is unable to secure a good foundation in primary school, which takes about six years, they cannot catch up in JHS, which is only about three years.”

His comments come amid national concern over declining performance in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), renewing calls for focused investment in literacy, numeracy, and foundational learning at the primary level.
