Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has strongly rejected suggestions to stop sharing his opinions on the 2024 general elections, despite criticism for supporting NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Critics, such as Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen of the Movement for Change party, have advised the ex-president to refrain from making public endorsements due to his role as a respected statesman.
Nevertheless, while addressing the crowd at the Ofori Panin Palace on November 27 during a campaign rally in Abuakwa South, Mr Kufuor stood by his endorsement, reiterating his confidence in Dr Bawumia’s leadership qualities and abilities.
“I am facing criticism for voicing my opinions on national matters due to my position as a statesman. Experience and wisdom are often associated with age,” Kufuor stated, stressing the importance of his political roots and the credibility of his views.
Explaining his unwavering support for the NPP and its candidate, he added, “The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is my political affiliation, and it was through this party that I attained the presidency.
“Additionally, my child, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been elected through the party.”
Kufuor praised Dr. Bawumia’s competence, particularly during tough economic times, when reflecting on his contributions as President.
“During my administration, he was a member of the Bank of Ghana team and demonstrated remarkable performance during a challenging period when Ghana was in financial distress. Their efforts were instrumental in revitalizing the economy at that time,” Kufuor said.
The ex-president encouraged the citizens of Ghana to back the NPP in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of Dr Bawumia’s leadership for the country’s advancement.
