A POPULAR ACTRESS DIDN’T WANT TO FEATURE IN THE SAME MOVIE WITH ME BECAUSE SHE SAID I WAS TOO “LOCAL” – Actress Portia Asare
Actress Portia Asare has shared details about one of the most painful experiences she encountered during the initial stages of her acting career.
In an honest confession, she expressed how she was unjustly criticized and overlooked solely due to her experience in the local film industry.
Portia stated that she had once been selected for a film, a chance she was thrilled about, since it was a significant production that could have provided her with greater visibility and broadened her influence beyond the Kumawood sector.
Nonetheless, her enthusiasm quickly faded when she learned that another actress, who had originally been part of the project, chose to withdraw solely because Portia was involved.
Recounting the distressing event, Portia shared that the actress involved was recognized for her roles in English-speaking films and, upon learning of Portia’s casting, explicitly informed the producer that she would withdraw from the project.
When the producer asked her why she was withdrawing, she reportedly said that she considered Portia to be “too local” and did not align with the caliber of films she wished to be linked to.
Listening to those words was a crushing shock to Portia. She remembered how profoundly it impacted her, leaving her feeling undeserving and undervalued in the field she was striving to succeed in.
She always thought that talent should be the key factor in acting, rather than the language spoken or the genre of films they appeared in.
