ACCRA BEGINS ONE-MONTH BAN ON NOISE-MAKING FOR HOMOWO FESTIVAL
AMA enforces traditional silence ahead of annual Ga Homowo celebrations; violators to face prosecution.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced the start of a one-month ban on noise-making and drumming within the Greater Accra Region, effective today, May 12, 2025, and lasting until June 12, 2025. This measure is part of the traditional preparations for the annual Ga Homowo festival.
In a statement issued by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at AMA, the directive prohibits loudspeakers, drums, tambourines, funeral rites, roadside evangelism, and all other noise-producing activities across Accra.
To ensure compliance, AMA, together with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), local assemblies, and the Ghana Police Service, has deployed a special task force. Authorities have emphasized that strict legal actions will be taken against any individual or group found violating this directive.
AMA further explained that the Homowo festival dates differ across traditional areas within the Ga State. Thus, communities including Osu, La, Nungua, Tema, Kpone, Prampram, and Ningo will individually announce their bans and festival dates after June 12, 2025.
