INADEQUATE FUNDING RESPONSIBLE FOR DECLINE OF MOVIE INDUSTRY – Media Personality, KOD

Kofi Okyere Darko, a well-known Ghanaian media personality and fashion icon, commonly referred to as KOD, has raised issues about the insufficient funding typically given to the creative arts field.

KOD pointed out during the 3Entertainment Creative Arts Forum that the absence of funding has impeded the making of films and other creative endeavors.

He believes that additional funding from private and government sources would greatly support industry expansion

“The major challenge facing the creative industry or the orange economy in this country is that of funding. If we are able to put some funds into what we do, I think it will elevate it to the next level.

“People are asking why Ghana is not producing movies like we did back in the day, executive producers are struggling. So if there’s funding from the private sector, working hand-in-hand with the government, we are definitely going to propel what we do to greater height,” he stated.

KOD’s statements align with those of other creative industry players like veteran Ghanaian actress Akorfa Edjeani, who voiced her disappointment about the inadequate financial backing for the nation’s film sector.

She pointed out the difference in funding between sports and the film industry, wondering why large amounts of money are given to sports while the film fund is neglected.

She urged leaders to acknowledge the wider influence of the creative industry beyond just entertainment, emphasizing its role in providing education, information, and cultural reorientation.
