Owusu Appiah, a specialist in environmental health, has discussed the impact of the ongoing galamsey activities in Ghana on the health of Ghanaians.
In an Onua FM interview, the environmental health specialist revealed that studies have found that galamsey activities are the root cause of many illnesses, such as the rising instances of kidney failures in adults and children.
He expressed sorrow over the ongoing shift in weather; pointing out that deforestation by galamsayers, particularly in forested areas for galamsey operations, is a major factor hindering rainfall.
Owusu Appiah believes that these actions are the cause of the deformities in babies born in mining communities.
“Galamsey has dire effects on the country. It is a big problem and comes with big consequences. In the next five years, we won’t have potable water to drink if this continues. Brain cancer is now prevalent in Ghana because the mercury these galamsayers use for this activity ends up poisoning fish in these water bodies. When anyone eats these fishes with mercury, it runs through the blood and the brain and damages the central nervous system.” He warned.
