The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to quickly relocate all police commanders in Regional, Divisional, and District positions who are currently working in the country’s mining areas.
He thinks this change will take away officers who have been in these areas for a long time but haven’t managed to stop illegal mining activities.
He explained that this directive is part of a bigger strategy to stop illegal mining, or “galamsey,” across the nation.
The commanders who are moved will go to regions without any mining activities, and new officers will take their place.
These new officers will be on a three-month trial to demonstrate their ability to combat illegal mining effectively.
While speaking to Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, the Asomwase MP, Alhaji Muntaka, emphasized his strong commitment to enforcing this order, even though there is pressure on the IGP to reverse the decision.
He assured the people of Ghana of the security agencies and the government’s commitment to fight illegal mining in the country.
