INTERIOR MINISTRY DECLARES FRIDAY, MARCH 6 STATUTORY PUBLIC HOLIDAY FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY
Government urges nationwide observance in line with public holidays law

The Ministry for the Interior has announced that Friday, March 6, 2026, will be observed nationwide as a statutory public holiday to mark Ghana’s Independence Day.
In a public notice posted on its official Facebook page on Monday, March 2, the Ministry reminded citizens and institutions across the country to recognise and observe the day in accordance with national law governing public holidays.
“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, March 6, 2026, marks Independence Day, which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read.
Independence Day commemorates Ghana’s attainment of independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, making it the first sub-Saharan African country to gain sovereignty.
The annual celebration is typically marked with parades, cultural displays, and official ceremonies across the country, highlighting Ghana’s history, achievements and commitment to democratic governance.
The Ministry’s reminder ensures that public and private institutions make the necessary arrangements to observe the national holiday accordingly.
