INTERIOR MINISTRY GIVES GUN OWNERS SIX WEEKS TO SURRENDER ILLEGAL GUNS

A stringent six-week deadline has been set by Ghana’s Ministry of the Interior for anyone in possession of unregistered or illegally obtained firearms.

The public is urged to voluntarily turn them over or face dire repercussions.

The statewide exercise, which will take place from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026, is hailed as a critical step in combating the spread of illegal firearms.

The campaign, according to authorities, is intended to stop the increasing gun-related violence and stop more community insecurity.

Through the Gun Amnesty Initiative, citizens can turn in illegal or undocumented firearms without fear of prosecution.

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the interior minister, issued a warning at the start of the campaign, stating that anyone found in possession of illicit firearms after the grace period would be subject to severe penalties.

The Minister explained that the measure is part of a broader national push to strengthen public safety. He noted: “This exercise is critical to ensuring a safer and more secure environment for every Ghanaian.”

In order to prevent celebratory shooting, lessen injuries, and save lives throughout the festive season, the Ministry has also temporarily banned the use of guns during traditional festivals as part of the amnesty.

Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak had earlier, on October 27, 2025, expressed the government’s resolve to deal with the growing flow of illegal weapons.

He affirmed that stringent restrictions on the importation and sale of firearms would accompany the six-week gun amnesty, which would start on November 11, 2025.

The initiative’s main objective, according to the Ministry, is to dramatically lower the quantity of illicit weapons in use while bolstering social stability and national security.

According to officials, they are still optimistic that the exercise will significantly help create a safer Ghana for everybody.
