‘IT IS NOT ADVISABLE TO BUILD A STATUE FOR YOURSELF WHILE ALIVE’– Speaker Alban Bagbin Criticizes Akufo-Addo’s Takoradi Statue

Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has joined the debate regarding the statue of former President Nana Akufo-Addo in Takoradi.

During a diplomatic trip to Ghanaian communities in Cote d’Ivoire last week, Bagbin conveyed his disapproval, highlighting that true leadership involves providing positive examples.

“When you are alive, it is not advisable to build a statue for yourself. When you are no more, the people who admire what you have done will build one for you,” he remarked.

The statue, revealed in November 2024, swiftly ignited significant public outcry, as numerous Ghanaians debated its significance considering the Western Region’s development issues.

Critics contended that the Akufo-Addo government had offered little to the region, rendering the statue an insult to their hardships.

The dispute escalated significantly on January 13, 2025, when unidentified people defaced and ruined the statue.

Bagbin also warned against actions that could promote moral decay, stating, “Don’t sow evil; if you sow evil, you will reap it. Leadership is about setting the best example for others to follow.”
