IT’S DANGEROUS TO KEEP TWO GAS CYLINDERS IN YOUR HOUSE – National Fire Service Cautions

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Northern Regional Public Relations Officer, Assistant Divisional Officer Grade Two (ADO II) Baba Hudu, has warned the public against storing liquefied petroleum gas in additional cylinders adjacent to the ones that are already in use.

According to ADOII Hudu, even if individuals stockpiled gas to prevent shortages and combat inflation, doing so endangered their lives and property because, in the event of an accident, having two or more filled gas cylinders in a kitchen would generate a serious fire outbreak.

He emphasized that, in contrast to a situation where there were more filled cylinders involved, a fire caused by leaky gas cylinders could be quickly addressed and put out.

ADOII Mr. Hudu urged members of the public to occasionally dip the tube connecting a cylinder to the burner in soapy water to check for pores, which would be exposed by bubbles in the water, when he was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Wednesday about the safe management of gas cylinders.

He advised customers to throw out cylinders that have been in use for around six to ten years and advised frequent replacement of cylinder regulators and seals to prevent leaks, which commonly result in explosion.

He cautioned cylinder users to call for repairs right once, keep doors and windows open, and warn that sparks of any kind could trigger gas explosions in an airtight atmosphere during leakages.

He said: “After filling a cylinder, leave it for about an hour for the gas to settle before using it. Movement causes the gas to expand, which makes it dangerous to light immediately.”

ADOII Hudu also urged gas consumers not to panic and let little fires from cylinders to develop, and counseled those who had experienced cylinder leaks to remain composed and act boldly by dousing the fire with a damp towel or blanket.
