Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo has responded to backlash over his transition from the entertainment industry to politics.
During an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, he discussed how certain individuals disapproved of his political aspirations due to his background in the entertainment industry.
John Dumelo, who has shifted from a thriving acting career to a political role, made this remark when questioned about addressing the stigma of his showbiz origins.
He emphasized the variety of backgrounds already represented in Ghana’s Parliament, noting that individuals from different sectors, such as law, medicine, and business, hold positions as Members of Parliament.
“I see it as a little bit disrespectful because you have lawyers, you have doctors, you have businessmen in Parliament,” he said.
He emphasized that the essence of political service lies in adequately representing one’s constituents, irrespective of past career trajectories.
“We even had hairdressers in parliament,” he added.
He pointed that politicians are the very individuals who approach entertainers for endorsements during their political campaigns, recognizing the influence entertainers wield.
“And so, for me, that stigma is just one of those things that I just when people say it, I just laugh about it.
But all in all, it’s for us to represent the people well,” he further noted.
