“IT’S NONSENSE TO PAY CHURCH MUSICIANS” – Bishop Dag Heward-Mills Sparks Controversy

Founder and General Overseer of Lighthouse Chapel International, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, has stirred up public debate after denouncing the practice of paying musicians for performing in church.

In a video currently making rounds on social media, the prominent Ghanaian preacher passionately told his congregation that the church should not be a place where members offer their gifts in exchange for money.

“Watch out for people who do things for money. In my church, I said I am not going to pay people to play instruments, because I play all the instruments. I play drums, piano, and guitar,” Bishop Heward-Mills stated during his sermon.

He revealed that his dissatisfaction with musicians requesting payment led him to establish a music school within his church. According to him, the initiative, which trains children to play musical instruments, ensures the church has dedicated talent without having to depend on external performers.

“I got all the children in the church and set up a music school where every child must learn how to play the piano. So now, all the children in my church can play the piano,” he explained.

Bishop Heward-Mills further emphasized that service in the church should be driven by love for God and not financial gain.

“Nobody can come and bully us in church by asking to be paid before singing. It’s nonsense. Here, we don’t pay, because you love Jesus. If not, go,” he added unapologetically.

His comments come shortly after similar sentiments were shared by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy, who criticised secular musicians for what he described as exploiting the church before seeking fame elsewhere.
