Comedian, Jacinta Ocansey has disclosed that she experiences gender-based discrimination in the creative arts sector.
During an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, the actress and stand-up comedian revealed that there have been times when her gender has led to her being paid less than her male colleagues.
Jacinta recalled turning down jobs in the past when she found out that her male coworkers were paid a lot more for the same work.
She emphasized that she had turned down offers when she felt underappreciated, adding that it is her responsibility to negotiate for more salary in these circumstances and to politely decline offers if they don’t fit her needs.
Jacinta brought attention to a few instances of discriminatory treatment, such as opportunities being refused and an event organizer labeling women as “difficult to manage.”
She said it is unjust that women in the sector be evaluated on the basis of their gender rather than their credentials and skills.
She said “I think it’s funny when people say that ‘because you are a woman is easier for you in the industry’.
“No, it’s actually tougher when you’re a woman. How many people want to sleep with a man before they help him?”
