JAPANESE FIRM TO INVEST $100M TO MAKE GHANA AFRICA’S FIRST AI-POWERED AGRICULTURE HUB

Degas Limited, a Japanese agritech company, has announced a $100 million investment over the next four years to position Ghana as Africa’s first AI-powered agricultural hub.
The initiative will scale up Degas’ model that has already supported 86,000 smallholder farmers across 122,000 acres in Ghana, by leveraging AI-driven satellite monitoring and precision agriculture to boost yields, cut risks, and improve access to affordable financing.
Speaking at the Ghana Presidential Investment Forum, Degas CEO and founder Doga Makiura said:
“Ghana has shown that when technology meets a clear national vision, smallholder farmers can thrive. Our $100 million commitment will scale AI-driven precision agriculture so farmers can increase productivity and incomes.”
According to Makiura, Degas’ platform has already led to incomes doubling and a 95% repayment rate among participating farmers, which has attracted interest from Japanese investors.
President John Dramani Mahama welcomed the announcement, calling it a strong endorsement of his administration’s agricultural transformation agenda.
“By leveraging AI and precision technologies, we will improve productivity, enhance food security, and create dignified jobs for youth across rural communities,” Mahama said.
