JOHN MAHAMA SWORN IN AS GHANA’S 6TH PRESIDENT UNDER THE 4TH REPUBLIC

John Dramani Mahama, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been officially sworn in as Ghana’s 6th President under the Fourth Republic following a resounding electoral victory in the December 2024 elections. The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, occurred on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

This historic event also marked the inauguration of Ghana’s first female Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who took the oath of office alongside President Mahama.

A Triumphant Return to the Presidency

John Mahama’s journey back to the presidency is unprecedented in Ghana’s political history. After serving as the 4th President of the Fourth Republic from 2013 to 2017, Mahama became the first president to lose a re-election bid and reclaim the office after contesting two more elections. His landslide victory in 2024 cemented his legacy as a resilient statesman and a symbol of democratic perseverance.

Born in Damongo, now part of the Savannah Region, 66-year-old Mahama brings decades of experience across various levels of governance. From Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi to Deputy Minister, Minister of Communications, Vice President, and President, his political career exemplifies dedication and service to Ghana.

A Visionary Leader with a Focus on Development

During his first term, President Mahama spearheaded transformative infrastructure projects spanning education, healthcare, transportation, ICT, and energy. These investments played a pivotal role in positioning Ghana as a Lower-Middle-Income Country and laid the groundwork for future growth.

His passion for empowering people, particularly women and youth, has been a hallmark of his leadership. In 2020, Mahama made history by nominating Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate—the first woman to run for vice president on a major party ticket in Ghana. Their joint victory in 2024 has now ushered in a new era of inclusivity and gender equity in Ghana’s governance.

Beyond infrastructure, Mahama’s commitment to agriculture remains deeply personal, stemming from his roots as the son of a prominent rice farmer. His focus on leveraging technology and value addition in agriculture aims to inspire Ghanaian youth to view farming as a viable business opportunity.

Global Influence and Recognition

On the international stage, President Mahama has been a vocal advocate for intra-African trade and regional security. As a former Chairperson of ECOWAS and the African Union’s High-Level Trade Committee, he played a key role in laying the foundation for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), now headquartered in Ghana.

Mahama’s global contributions have earned him several honorary doctorates from prestigious institutions, including the University of Aberdeen, Lyon Business School, and Igbinedion University. He is also a celebrated author, with his memoir, My First Coup d’État and Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa, offering insights into his upbringing and leadership journey.

A New Chapter for Ghana

With his return to the presidency, John Dramani Mahama pledges to build on his legacy, prioritizing economic transformation, social justice, and the empowerment of all Ghanaians. His enduring partnership with First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama, to whom he has been married for over 32 years, remains a cornerstone of his exemplary leadership and family values.

As Ghana enters this new chapter under Mahama’s leadership, the nation looks ahead with hope, eager to witness the realization of his vision for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
