JUJU SCARE ROCKS KARAGA AS BURIED CHARMS RETRIEVED FROM POLLING STATION

The Karaga Constituency in the Northern Region, a critical battleground for political observers, has been gripped by a juju scare following the discovery of buried charms at a polling station ahead of the Special Voting held on Monday, December 2, 2024.

An aide to the Finance Minister, Abd Alhaliim Tikuma, reportedly retrieved the buried items after receiving a tip-off. Speaking to reporters, Tikuma explained that three separate charms were unearthed, each buried at different locations by unknown individuals.

He claimed that the contents of the charms were related to the ongoing elections and speculated that political opponents were responsible. Tikuma, however, assured supporters that such “evil machinations” would fail, describing the act as an attempt to undermine the election process.

The incident has added to the tension in Karaga, where Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam is seeking re-election as Member of Parliament (MP) on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He faces a familiar rival, Alhassan Sualihu Dandaawa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.

Historical Context of Karaga’s Electoral Landscape

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam made history in 2020 by becoming the first NPP candidate to win the Karaga parliamentary seat since its creation in 2004. He secured 28,335 votes, defeating NDC’s Alhassan Sualihu Dandaawa, who polled 19,690 votes. This victory marked a significant shift in a constituency traditionally dominated by the NDC.

Before the NPP’s breakthrough in 2020, the Karaga seat had consistently been held by the NDC. In 2004, the NDC’s Iddrisu Dawuda won with 14,868 votes (64.50%), defeating NPP’s Osman Issah Abubakari, who garnered 8,192 votes (35.50%). Similarly, in the presidential elections that year, the NDC’s John Evans Atta-Mills received 14,469 votes (63.68%), surpassing NPP’s John A. Kufuor, who earned 7,846 votes (34.53%).

The retrieval of the charms has fueled speculation and debate, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the election season in Karaga. With Dr. Amin Adam’s groundbreaking 2020 victory still fresh in voters’ minds, the upcoming elections promise to test whether the NPP can solidify its hold on the constituency or if the NDC will reclaim its stronghold.

While the origins and intent behind the buried charms remain unclear, the discovery has heightened political tensions and added an unusual twist to an already charged electoral atmosphere.
