JUSTICE BAFFOE-BONNIE’S VETTING SUSPENDED AMIDST PARLIAMENTARY CONFUSION

A heated exchange between the Majority and Minority leaders over the description of the nominee as "disputed" forced a temporary pause in the high-stakes proceedings.

The parliamentary vetting of Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, was temporarily suspended on Tuesday following a heated and contentious exchange between the Majority and Minority leaders.

The session, which began around 11:45 a.m., was abruptly halted after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin referred to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as a “disputed nominee.” He accused the Majority caucus of acting in bad faith throughout the vetting process.

This characterization immediately drew a strong objection from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who described Afenyo-Markin’s remark as “inappropriate and politically charged.”

In his defense, Afenyo-Markin insisted that the Minority was within its rights to hold Parliament accountable. He argued that expressing reservations about the nomination was a legitimate and necessary part of their democratic duty, particularly given underlying concerns about political motivations influencing the process.

The suspension allowed for a cooling-off period before the Appointments Committee was able to resume its questioning of the nominee. The incident highlights the deep-seated political tensions and the contentious nature of this specific nomination to the nation’s highest judicial office.
