Doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have suspended all surgical procedures indefinitely due to a crippling water shortage that has disrupted operations at Ghana’s second-largest referral hospital.
In a memo dated March 25, the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) announced the drastic measure, citing severe risks to patient safety and hygiene standards. The Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorate has also halted new admissions until water supply is restored.
“The current lack of water has reached a critical point, compromising both patient safety and healthcare delivery,” the memo stated. The hospital has struggled with shortages since last week after Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) cut supply due to repair works.
KATH’s Public Relations Directorate confirmed the crisis, revealing that emergency supplies from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), and GWCL have been insufficient to meet the hospital’s daily demand.
Dr. Michael Leat, KADA Chairman, apologized for the disruption but stressed that the decision was unavoidable. “We will continue managing existing cases with extreme caution while urging immediate intervention,” he said.
The suspension has left patients in limbo, with authorities racing to resolve the crisis. GWCL has yet to provide a timeline for restoring full supply.
