KORLE BU TEACHING HOSPITAL LAB WORKERS EMBARK ON STRIKE

Industrial action begins over unresolved grievances with hospital management

Medical Laboratory Workers at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are set to begin a strike today, Wednesday, February 4, to protest what they describe as longstanding unresolved issues with hospital management.

The decision follows a statutory notice served in late January to the Ministry of Health, hospital management, and the National Labour Commission (NLC), notifying them of the union’s intent to embark on industrial action.

In a statement, the Korle Bu Laboratory Workers’ Union urged members to remain disciplined and comply strictly with official directives as the protest unfolds.

The strike will begin as a sit-down protest across all hospital laboratories, lasting from February 4 to February 8. During this period, only skeletal staff will operate, and outpatient department (OPD) services will be suspended.

According to the union, only emergency in-patient cases will be attended to, while all other laboratory samples, including follow-up tests scheduled beyond February 8, will not be processed.

However, services at the Cardiothoracic Centre and the Blood Bank are expected to continue during the initial phase of the strike.
