The leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has criticized former President John Agyekum Kufuor for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer ahead of the 2024 general elections. Kyerematen argues that the endorsement compromises Kufuor’s stature as an elder statesman and has sparked public backlash.
Former President Kufuor, in an interview with journalists on Sunday, November 17, described Bawumia as the best candidate to lead the country, urging Ghanaians to support his bid for the presidency.
“Given the current global circumstances, I firmly believe that Ghana’s economy will experience significant improvement if Bawumia is elected as President,” Kufuor stated. “With divine guidance, he is capable of delivering on this promise. His remarkable economic contributions during my tenure as part of the Bank of Ghana’s team demonstrated his ability to stabilize the national currency and steer economic growth.”
However, speaking on Oyerepa TV on Monday, November 18, Alan Kyerematen expressed disappointment over Kufuor’s public show of support for Bawumia. He described it as a political misstep that could overshadow Kufuor’s otherwise revered legacy.
“Kufuor is my uncle and an elderly statesman, so I hesitate to criticize him publicly,” Kyerematen remarked. “But his endorsement of Bawumia has created a significant blot on his political career. Do you hear the public reactions? People are now making derogatory comments about him, and this is damaging his hard-earned reputation.”
Kyerematen questioned why Kufuor, a respected figure in Ghanaian politics, would choose to involve himself in active partisan politics at this stage.
“He’s highly regarded across Ghana, so why now engage in such divisive politics?” Kyerematen added. “His actions are regrettable, and he’s treading on dangerous ground. I urge him to reconsider his involvement because he knows exactly what he’s doing.”
Kyerematen, who left the NPP earlier this year to form the Movement for Change, has positioned himself as an alternative to the two dominant political parties—NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His critique of Kufuor highlights deepening tensions within Ghana’s political landscape as the December 2024 elections approach.
With his newly-formed Movement for Change, Kyerematen continues to present himself as a leader capable of delivering a fresh direction for Ghana while challenging the status quo of Ghanaian politics.
