The nominee for Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has pledged to prevent any new mining activities in Ghana’s forest reserves if confirmed. Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 27, 2025, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable management of natural resources.
Mr. Buah highlighted the urgency of protecting forest reserves from mining, describing it as a critical step toward preserving Ghana’s ecological balance. “We have said there will be no new mining activities in forest reserves, and the intention is to amend L.I. 2462 to ensure the provision allowing for mining in reserves is no longer in place,” he stated. This legislative amendment, he explained, would be central to his policy agenda.
He assured the committee that, if confirmed, his priority would be to initiate reforms to Legislative Instrument 2462, reinforcing the ban on mining in protected areas. “If you give me the chance, my first activity will be to ensure that there will be no new mining activities in forest reserves,” he vowed.
Mr. Buah’s declaration underscores the government’s determination to make environmental preservation a cornerstone of its development strategy, ensuring that forest reserves remain protected from encroachment by mining operations.
