The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has ordered the Minerals Commission to revoke the license of Akonta Mining.
The decision to revoke the license of the mining company is that “Despite holding a lease to mine legally off-reserve, Akonta Mining was found operating illegally in the Samreboi enclave of the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, selling access to forest lands for GHS 300,000 per concession, and collecting illegal gold royalties.
He further stated that “Investigations revealed collusion with some forestry officers and security personnel, facilitating the destruction of forest land and water bodies, including the River Tano”.
He made this decision known at a press conference he addressed on April 21, 2025.
The Minister indicated that the Attorney General has been briefed and will be made to take action.
“The Attorney-General has also since been briefed and has taken over the investigations for further action. Akonta Mining does not have a lease to mine in the Tano Nimiri Forest reserve, and their mining activities in the forest are illegal and criminal.
And that, the Mahama government will stop at nothing to bring the company to book”.
