The family of the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, former Group CEO of Access Holdings Plc, has been plunged into a bitter legal dispute over his estate. At the center of the controversy is 90-year-old Shyngle Wigwe, the late banker’s father, who has filed a lawsuit against his own granddaughter, 26-year-old Otutochi Channel Wigwe, over the distribution of his son’s vast assets.
The legal battle comes just over a year after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, who, along with his wife, Doreen Chizoba Wigwe, and their 29-year-old son, Chizi Wigwe, perished in a helicopter crash near Nipton, California, on February 9, 2024. The crash also claimed the lives of former Nigerian Exchange Group Plc Chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo and two crew members.
Reports surfaced last October alleging that Pastor Shyngle Wigwe and other family members had attempted to alter Herbert Wigwe’s will to disinherit his children. While the family initially denied these claims, a caveat against the late CEO’s will was later filed at the Probate Registry by Christian Chukwuka Wigwe, who claims to be a cousin acting on behalf of Shyngle Wigwe.
The family initially stated they had withdrawn the lawsuit, emphasizing that their focus was on the welfare of Herbert Wigwe’s children. However, recent court documents reveal that the lawsuit was never dropped, exposing what appears to be a calculated effort to challenge the distribution of the late banker’s estate.
The court has since ruled in favor of Herbert Wigwe’s children, including Otutochi, Uche Wigwe, and Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, stating that Shyngle Wigwe and Christian Chukwuka Wigwe have “no right to seek the reliefs” they requested. The ruling has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the motives behind the lawsuit and the family’s handling of the inheritance.
Social media has been ablaze with reactions to the scandal. User @gcefoodsnevents commented, “As in, grandpa and granddaughter? Just wow,” while @gee_prince1 speculated, “Entrusting assets worth millions of dollars to a young lady could wipe out the entire Wigwe family name. She could get played by a boyfriend, and when she marries, what next? The husband could convert the assets to his name. Good move.”
Others, like @obieze_wire, took a more philosophical approach, stating, “As a man, enjoy yourself to the fullest in this life,” while @parzkhal quipped, “Something wey we no go carry go🥲 We still dey run sites o🛜🔌.”
The case has not only exposed deep rifts within the Wigwe family but also raised questions about the complexities of wealth, inheritance, and family loyalty. As the legal drama unfolds, one thing is clear: the legacy of Herbert Wigwe, a man who built an empire, is now at the center of a contentious battle that threatens to tarnish his memory.
