LICENSE EXPIRATION TO BE LINKED TO HOLDER’S DATE OF BIRTH – DVLA Announces
Authority to roll out new SMS alert system for renewals to boost compliance and efficiency

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a new policy that will link the expiration of driver’s licenses to the holder’s date of birth, beginning this year.
According to DVLA Chief Executive, Julius Neequaye Kotey, the reform is part of a broader plan to modernise operations, enhance compliance, and improve service delivery across the transport sector.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, January 23, 2026, to mark his first year in office, Mr. Kotey explained that the initiative will simplify the renewal process for drivers and ensure better record management.
“Mind you, this year [2026], we are starting a project where license expiration will be attached to your date of birth,” he said.
“So your date of birth will be the day your license will expire. That is the new initiative we are bringing on board. The public should know that.”
The DVLA boss also revealed that the Authority will roll out an SMS notification system that will alert drivers ahead of their license or roadworthiness renewal dates.
“We have introduced the SMS notification system, where people will be informed when their license expiration is due,” he stated.
“When it’s time for you to renew your Roadworthy certificate, we’ll send you an SMS reminder with the set date.”
Mr. Kotey added that the new system will not only help drivers avoid penalties for late renewals but also contribute to increased revenue mobilisation and improved efficiency within the DVLA.
The announcement forms part of a series of digital transformation initiatives the Authority is implementing to enhance customer experience and promote a more accountable and transparent licensing system in Ghana.
