POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR SHOOTING HIS GIRLFRIEND

Inspector Ahmed Twumasi received a life sentence for the 2023 killing of Victoria Dapaah

In a landmark verdict that concludes a nearly three-year legal battle, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maadwoa.

The Kumasi High Court, presided over by Justice Rosemarie Baah-Tosu, delivered the judgment on Friday, October 24, 2025, following a 5–2 majority jury verdict finding Twumasi guilty of murder. The case had drawn significant public attention and sparked nationwide debates on gun violence and accountability among law enforcement officers.

The victim’s family, accompanied by heavy security, filled the courtroom to witness the conclusion of the emotionally charged trial. Nana Addo Barima, the family spokesperson and uncle of the deceased, expressed relief at the verdict but highlighted concerns over the slow pace of justice.

“We have been on this case for quite some time and now the verdict is out. But we have concerns about the slow pace of justice,” Barima stated. He also appealed for state compensation, noting that Maadwoa left behind a young child. “What does the law say about that? The child needs help, and we appeal to authorities to help us take care of her.”

The conviction brings a measure of closure to a case that has resonated deeply with the public and underscored calls for systemic reforms to prevent abuses of power and protect victims of domestic and gun violence.
