MAHAMA ADVOCATES FOR LGBTQ BILL TO BE GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED RATHER THAN PRIVATE MEMBERS’ INITIATIVE

President John Dramani Mahama has proposed that the LGBTQ bill currently under consideration in Ghana’s parliament should be introduced as a government-sponsored bill rather than a private member’s bill. This recommendation highlights the strategic importance of ensuring the bill receives adequate attention and resources within the legislative process.

A private member’s bill, typically introduced by legislators who are not part of the executive, often struggles to gain priority on the legislative agenda. Such bills face challenges like limited time for debate and insufficient support, which typically result in their failure to pass.

On the other hand, government-sponsored bills suggested by members of the executive, such as ministers receive higher priority in parliament. They benefit from government resources, broader support across party lines, and sufficient time for debate, significantly increasing their chances of passage.

President Mahama’s suggestion underscores the need for a more coordinated and resource-backed approach to address the controversial LGBTQ issue in Ghana. By advocating for government sponsorship, he aims to position the bill as a central topic of national importance, encouraging informed debate and facilitating legal reforms that could foster equality and inclusivity in the country.

This call for a government-led approach reflects Mahama’s commitment to addressing sensitive societal issues within a structured and impactful framework, ensuring that debates on LGBTQ rights are given the prominence they deserve in Ghana’s legislative landscape.
