MAHAMA COMMENDS BAWUMIA’S STATESMANSHIP FOR EASING POST-ELECTION TENSIONS

President John Dramani Mahama has lauded former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his swift concession following the December 2024 elections, praising the gesture as a crucial act of statesmanship that safeguarded national peace and stability.

Speaking at his inauguration on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra, President Mahama emphasized the significance of Dr. Bawumia’s actions in preserving Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy on the African continent.

“Your early concession was not only a demonstration of your statesmanship but also an act that contributed immensely to reducing tensions across the nation,” President Mahama remarked during his address.

President Mahama acknowledged that in times of political uncertainty, such as the period following an election, it is common for emotions to run high. However, he credited Dr. Bawumia’s decision to promptly accept the electoral outcome as a key factor in fostering unity and stability during what could have been a turbulent moment in Ghana’s democratic history.

“This gesture was vital in maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a democratic exemplar,” Mahama added.

Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President under the previous administration, has been widely applauded for his calm and measured conduct during the political transition. His early concession not only quelled potential tensions but also reinforced Ghana’s longstanding tradition of peaceful power transitions.

President Mahama used the opportunity to call on political leaders across the spectrum to prioritize the nation’s well-being above partisan interests.

“In times of political contest, it is easy for tempers to flare, but leadership demands putting the country first. Dr. Bawumia’s decision exemplified this, guiding us through a critical period in our democratic journey,” he said.

As President Mahama begins his historic non-consecutive second term, he reiterated his commitment to fostering unity and building on Ghana’s democratic gains. He concluded his remarks by urging all political actors to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure that Ghana continues to be a shining example for the world.

“May Ghana’s democracy remain a beacon of hope, inspiring nations across the globe,” President Mahama declared.

Dr. Bawumia’s statesmanship during the elections serves as a reminder of the importance of selfless leadership in securing the future of a nation, earning him respect and admiration from both domestic and international observers.
