MAHAMA HAILS MILITARY FOR RESTORING CALM IN BAWKU, OTHER CONFLICT AREAS
President praises Armed Forces’ professionalism and discipline in maintaining national stability
President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their professionalism, discipline, and dedication in helping to restore relative calm in Bawku and other conflict-prone parts of the country.
Speaking at the End of Year West Africa Social Activity (WASSA) 2025 held at Burma Camp in Accra on Friday, January 23, 2026, President Mahama lauded the military for its pivotal role in ensuring national peace and security amid regional instability.
He acknowledged that, while Ghana continues to experience isolated conflicts in areas such as Bawku, Alavanyo, Nkonya, Nkwanta, and Nantong, the overall security situation remains largely peaceful a testament to the Armed Forces’ professionalism and sense of duty.
“This enviable position is attributable in no small measure to the professionalism, discipline, and sacrifice of the men and women of the Ghana Armed Forces in the execution of your constitutional mandate defending our territorial integrity, supporting the civil authority, providing humanitarian assistance, and contributing to national development,” the President said.
President Mahama singled out the military’s operations in Bawku and surrounding areas, particularly Operation Gong Gong and Operation Maiada Buuri, as critical interventions that have helped to stabilise the region.
“In this regard, I wish to commend the collective efforts of the Armed Forces under Operation Gong Gong and Operation Maiada Buuri in Bawku and its environs,” he stated.
The President emphasised that peace and security remain essential foundations for development, noting that the Armed Forces’ professionalism has been instrumental in ensuring that stability is gradually returning to affected communities.
“Peace and security are the bedrock of development, and your professional conduct during these operations has significantly contributed to the relative calm we are witnessing in these areas today,” he added.
President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces with the necessary logistics, training, and welfare improvements to enhance their operational effectiveness in safeguarding Ghana’s territorial integrity and internal stability.
