PRESIDENT JOHN MAHAMA KEEPS PROMISE OF LEAN GOVERNMENT, CONFIRMS NO DEPUTY MINISTERS FOR SELECTED MINISTRIES

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to a lean government by announcing that certain ministries will operate without deputy ministers. This decision is part of his promise to cap the total number of ministers in his administration at 60, a pledge he made during his campaign.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of six ministers at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, President Mahama stated, “As the ministers are approved by Parliament and sworn in, I will proceed to appoint deputy ministers for some ministries, ensuring the total number of ministers remains at 60, as I promised the people of Ghana.”

He emphasized that the move to forego deputy ministers for specific ministries aligns with his vision of forming a lean and efficient government. “This will make this government the leanest and, I believe, the most efficient in Ghana’s history,” the President remarked.

The ceremony saw the swearing-in of the first batch of ministers, marking the beginning of their official duties. The appointees include:

  • Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minister of Finance
  • Dr. Dominic Ayine as Attorney General and Minister of Justice
  • John Jinapor as Minister of Energy
  • Governs Kwame Agbodza as Minister of Roads and Highways
  • Eric Opoku as Minister of Food and Agriculture
  • Haruna Iddrisu as Minister of Education

This bold move by President Mahama is seen as a step toward streamlining governance and reducing administrative overhead, in line with the growing public demand for fiscal discipline and efficiency in government operations.

The decision has already sparked debate among political analysts and citizens, with many lauding the effort to cut down on bureaucracy, while others question how effectively ministries will function without deputy ministers. Nonetheless, the administration maintains that the strategy is a deliberate effort to prioritize efficiency over excess.
