MAHAMA PARDONS 64 SHUT-DOWN STATIONS, DIRECTS SAM GEORGE, NCA TO GIVE TIME TO FIX ISSUES

President John Dramani Mahama has issued an urgent order for the prompt reinstatement of broadcasting services to 64 radio stations that were shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA) for regulatory breaches.

The President has directed the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation to work closely with the NCA to guarantee that all impacted broadcasting facilities begin operations without any further delays.

This instruction was conveyed via an official announcement made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, issued shortly after the NCA’s enforcement measure.

The presidential statement detailed President Mahama’s views on maintaining a careful equilibrium between media freedom protection and regulatory enforcement.

The administration’s stance highlights that “ordering radio stations to cease operations during the regularisation of their authorisation might restrict the ability to exercise such freedoms.”

The communication highlighted the crucial role that media organizations play in democratic governance and reiterated the government’s promise to enhance their operational capabilities.

Furthermore, President Mahama has instructed the communications minister to work with the NCA to establish “a reasonable timeframe within which the affected stations should regularise their authorisation”.
The enforcement action impacted numerous broadcasting outlets, including well-known stations such as Happy FM, Asaase Radio, and Wontumi FM, all headquartered in Accra.
