MAHAMA WORKING TO BRING BACK MALI, NIGER AND BURKINA FASO TO ECOWAS – Foreign Affairs Minister, Okudzeto Ablakwa

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that President John Mahama is leading diplomatic initiatives to reintegrate Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

During an appearance on TV3’s Key Points on February 8, Ablakwa disclosed that Mahama has designated a special envoy to communicate with the leaders of the three breakaway countries and is anticipated to make diplomatic trips in the upcoming weeks.

In January 2024, the three Sahel countries declared their exit from ECOWAS, expressing discontent with the organization’s approach to governance and security matters. Their departure has sparked worries regarding regional stability, economic cooperation, and the battle against terrorism in West Africa.

Ablakwa highlighted that during Mahama’s leadership, Ghana’s foreign policy would focus on economic diplomacy and strategic alliances to guarantee real advantages for the people of Ghana.

He said;

We are determined to demystify foreign affairs. Diplomacy should not be abstract but should yield tangible benefits for ordinary Ghanaians. We will prioritize economic diplomacy and ensure that our international relations impact people’s livelihoods.
