“NO BIG EARRINGS, NO ANKLETS” -Traditional Leader Issues Dress Code for Asantehemaa’s Funeral
Otumfuo Fontomfrom Hemaa warns attendees to dress according to Asante tradition; four-day funeral rites begin September 15.
The Otumfuo Fontomfrom Hemaa, Nana Ama Akyiaa, has issued a strict dress code for attendees of the Asantehemaa’s funeral, emphasizing traditional modesty and humility during the four-day mourning period.
In a Facebook video address, the traditional leader explicitly prohibited wearing earrings and anklets to the funeral rites of Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away at the age of 98.
“Don’t wear anklets and big earrings to the funeral of the Asantehemaa because we are mourning. Our eyes are very red, grieving a great loss, and so we will not be playing here,” Nana Ama Akyiaa stated. “We will conduct the funeral as per the demands of the Asante tradition. So when you are coming to the funeral, be humble and dress according to the Asante tradition.”
The warning comes as final preparations are made for the four-day funeral rites scheduled from Monday, September 15, to Thursday, September 18, 2025. The traditional authority emphasized that shabbily dressed guests would not be tolerated at the funeral grounds.
The dress code reinforcement underscores the deep cultural significance of the Asantehemaa’s funeral and the importance of adhering to traditional protocols while mourning the passing of the queen mother, who held one of the most respected positions in Asante royalty.
