Ghanaian rapper Medikal has shared a harrowing account of his alleged wrongful imprisonment under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the musician accused the NPP government of abusing power by orchestrating his arrest and detention without just cause.
According to Medikal, he was placed in the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison following an “order from above,” despite efforts by his legal team to seek clarity and intervention. He expressed frustration over the lack of accountability and transparency during the ordeal.
“The NPP arrested me for no tangible reason, put me in cells, and locked me up in jail,” he stated in the post. “My lawyers tried to communicate with superiors, and all they got in response was ‘it’s an order from above.’”
While reflecting on his experience, the rapper directed an appeal to the incoming president, John Dramani Mahama, urging him to implement substantial changes to Ghana’s governance. Medikal acknowledged his reservations about Mahama but expressed faith in the president-elect’s ability to deliver.
“I do not trust him but rather believe in him. Let this new change be exhibited drastically! If not for anything, he should foresee the generation of Sharaf [Mahama’s son], a good friend of mine, and the betterment of the youth in Ghana and beyond,” he added.
The rapper’s statement has sparked conversations on social media, with many calling for reforms to ensure the protection of citizens’ rights regardless of political affiliation.
As the Mahama-led government prepares to assume office, Medikal’s plea adds to the growing calls for accountability, justice, and improved governance in the country.
