METRO MASS TO ACQUIRE 500 NEW BUSES TO AUGMENT OPERATIONS – TRANSPORT MINISTER
The government plans to significantly expand the public transport fleet, with the first 150 buses expected to arrive early next year to address current operational challenges and route expansion needs.

The government has announced plans to acquire 500 new buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) in a major initiative to revitalize public transportation across Ghana.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe revealed the plan in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, stating that the first phase of 150 buses is expected to be deployed early next year. The expansion aims to address the critical shortage of operational vehicles, as the company currently relies on just 134 buses to serve the entire country.
“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses, about 500 of them over a short to long term, to augment our operations,” Minister Nikpe stated. “These buses will be deployed within the country to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas.”
The minister emphasized that the procurement forms part of a broader strategy to modernize terminal facilities, improve service quality, and create employment opportunities in the transport sector. He also disclosed that Metro Mass is working to operationalize elements of a 24-hour economy, beginning with its traffic unit and vehicle maintenance departments to ensure consistent bus availability and reliability.
The expansion represents one of the most significant investments in Ghana’s public transportation infrastructure in recent years and responds to growing demands for affordable and reliable transport services across the country.
